My Five Favourite Books of January and February 2022

Just like in 2020 , the number of books I read last year  dipped below the 100 mark. For most people, reading 74 books in a year is still a lot, but in 2022, I wanted to try to prioritise reading for fun again. And to hold myself accountable, I'm going to write a post every two months picking out my five favourite books from among those I've read. So far, this is working quite well, as it's the end of February and I've already read 22 books. Here are the five that I most enjoyed reading. 1. We Are All Birds of Uganda  by Hafsa Zayyan. When I travel, I love to read books set in the places I'm visiting and when I spotted Hafsa Zayyan's novel in a bookshop just after I'd returned from a trip to Uganda , it was a serendipitous discovery. Four Speciality Coffee Shops To Visit in Madeira

By the time May rolled around, I was in serious need of a break and some sunshine. The Portuguese island of Madeira has been on my to-visit list for several years and I took advantage of the extra public holiday for the Coronation to book in a trip. I'll be sharing my Madeira travel guide soon but in the meantime, here are some of the speciality coffee spots I visited while I was there. Art Food Corner — Funchal I happened upon Art Food Corner on my first afternoon in Funchal while walking through the Zona Velha (old town). Attracted by the colourful décor and the promise of an Ethiopian speciality filter coffee, I grabbed a seat at one of the pavement tables and perused the menu. In the end, I ordered a piccolo, brewed with a Brazilian single-origin espresso, which was delicious – smooth and sweet. A Year in Leaps: 2019

As 2019 comes to a close, and a new year begins, it’s time for my annual round-up of my favourite five photos of the year that feature me jumping for joy in various locations. Regular readers will know that I use this post as a way of looking back on my travels throughout the year. And this year, I visited nine countries, including three that were new to me — Estonia (new), USA , Germany , Switzerland , Slovenia (new), Malaysia (new), Singapore , Spain and France. I also visited several major cities for the first time, including Chicago , Lausanne and Seville , while also returning to New York, Berlin and Cannes. I’m currently in the process of planning my foreign travel for next year, and torn between flying west and east for my main holiday. Stay tuned! 1.
